What makes a black tie wedding, a black tie wedding?

Ive never been invited to a black tie wedding. Ive been invited to plenty of formal, very nice weddings though. With flowing open bars, gorgeous venue and decorating, beautiful food and passed appetizers, etc.

It makes it a black tie if Chelsea Clinton or Kate Middleton is getting married. It is likely to be black tie if it’s on the White House, the Windsor Palace, The Vienna Royal Ballroom or the Waldorf Astoria.

It has to do not only with the venue, but also the hosts’ or couple social circles and occupation. Only 2% of the population can pull an event of that caliber, if you have renown politicians, or an erudite group of famous doctors, or several celebrities coming and you need a beefy security detail, likely it will be a black tie wedding.

For most, it is a Formal Wedding. Many presumptuous ignorants declare that their wedding is “black tie” when they are having it on a regular venue and mean formal attire and since their guests are equally clueless, they show up in suits and dresses. In short, unless you know the royals or politicians, it is not a black tie wedding. I’ve been to black tie events (political and charity fundraisers, political balls) but never a black tie wedding. I would need to meet the Kennedy’s before a get invited to one of those.
